Top 10 Benefits to Earning a Certification

Is it worth putting in all of the work? Consider these benefits of earning a certification, and if you see the benefits for your situation, go for it!
1.       A differentiator against the competition. When employers are interviewing, the competition is often stiff. If you have the certification, and the other person does not, you are at a definite advantage.

2.       Plugs you into 2 new communities: one that is earning the certification, and one that has the certification. For example, if you are going for your PMP certification, you will immediately have something in common with other hopefuls, and this can provide networking opportunities through classes, the web, and meetings. The same holds true when you have earn the certification; you are a member of the "club." While these are benefits of PMP certification, the same would hold true of most certifications.

3.       Gives you confidence that you have "passed through the chairs." When you have set your sights on a goal, put together a plan, work hard, and you reach it, you gain confidence, which spills over into all aspects of your life.

4.       Gives you tools to draw upon when needed. Having gone through all of the study and hard work, you have mastered a new body of knowledge. Put it to use as soon as you can!

5.       While it is said that "experience is the greatest teacher," a certification "rounds you out." Often, experience is strong in some areas, but not in others. Like education, experience rounds you out, giving exposure to ideas and approaches outside your comfort zone. In addition, being able to think outside your experience is an ingredient of leadership.

6.       You can be a better mentor. The ability to mentor is based greatly on experience, but the best mentors can reach beyond their experience. They are able to extrapolate from their experience, and relate it to someone else's entirely different experience.

7.       Establishes you as a continuous learner. Employers are always looking for people who never want to stop learning. Learning is a value unto itself, and those around you will respect and admire you for it, and sometimes even be a little jealous!

8.       Will enable you to make more money. Often, earning a certification, such as the PMP, can quickly lead to compensation increases of 20% and more.

9.       Enables you to better evaluate the talents and skills of others. With the discipline to master the material for the certification, you are in a better position to evaluate the skills of others. You have had the opportunity to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses in the process of earning the certification, and have a broader understanding of the skills and toolsets that can be effective.

10.   Gets your foot in the door in the new area. Many career changers turn to certifications to get themselves into a new area. For example, many technical people who want to advance will earn the PMP certification in order to move into a position of greater responsibility.

Key Benefits of Six Sigma Training

This training module originally developed by Motorola has become a ubiquitous standard present in almost all large business organizations. The overall success of Six Sigma has produced a new market wherein there is another opportunity for career growth.

The underlying reason why some companies and individuals choose to pay and spend time to undergo such training will be discussed in this article. This article will help you make an informed decision and check to see if six sigma is something you can seriously consider for you or your company.  Because this variety of quality improvement training can be costly; the benefits themselves should greatly outweigh the cost of acquiring training. Remember that after training, a Six Sigma Certification could easily translate to a job promotion or a salary increase.

Here are some key benefits that you should know, in no particular order:

1. Better use of resources. Enrolling in this training can show your employees how utilize resources much better than before. Because of this, the costs of operations, materials, and time will be lessened. This can easily translate to a better performing workforce as well as customer satisfaction.

2. High Employee Satisfaction. Six sigma training increases employee confidence as it trains new skills that can be easily used and built upon in the workplace. This also helps increase their marketability.

3. Better company reputation. The word of mouth news of companies offering training to employees can trickle down from the managers down to the cadet employees and eventually to their peers. This can translate to more potential candidates willing to apply to the company to be part of their workforce.

4. Better shareholder confidence. The shareholders can have more confidence if a company that they partially own is doing well. This can lead to more budgetary allocations and is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

5. Business partnerships improve. Companies that deal with other companies who have implemented the six sigma methodology can definitely see the improved services of such company. This can encourage them to have long term relationships that can speak well of both companies. Also, the six sigma tools and theories could rub off onto other companies which can lead them to follow suit by implementing said training.

In Conclusion, the key benefits are 1) Better use of resources, 2) High Employee Satisfaction, 3) Better company reputation, 4) Better shareholder confidence, and 5) Improved business partnerships. While these key benefits can definitely justify an investment in training there are some things that you should also keep in mind.

Experts recommend that instead of only having black belt or master black belts in your company, you should have a variety of lower Six Sigma belts as well, including Green and Yellow. While they are not as skilled as the black belts, the cost and time savings brought about by the complexity of the green and yellow belts can produce immediate results that can translate to the five key benefits outlined in this article.

How  important is Hadoop?
“Hadoop’s momentum is unstoppable as its open source roots grow wildly into enterprises. Its refreshingly unique approach to data management is transforming how companies store, process, analyze, and share big data.”

Hadoop Market
The above graph clearly shows that the Hadoop market is on an upward trend. This is because organizations have realized the advantage of implementing Hadoop and its various ecosystems. With larger implementation comes greater need for Hadoop professionals.

Challenges Faced when Implementing Hadoop
According to Sand Hill Group’s survey on Hadoop in early October, 2013, the respondents felt that the skill gap and inadequate number of professionals with knowledge in Hadoop is the biggest setback when it comes to Hadoop implementation. Both these issues need to be addressed as early as possible. The only way to do this is through proper Hadoop training, to enable professionals to meet up with the required skill and knowledge.

Need for Hadoop Training:
The following are the reasons as to why one must go for Hadoop training:
·         New technology and fewer skilled professional:
It is evident from its popularity that the implementation of Hadoop is a total success. Though there is a huge demand for people with Hadoop skill, there are actually fewer people with the right skill, as Hadoop is a relatively new technology. This skill gap can be minimized through Hadoop training.
·         Increase in number of professionals looking to switch careers:
There are professional from Java, Mainframe, Data Warehouse and testing background who are willing to change their career to Hadoop. This is not limited to professionals in these backgrounds. People are willing to leave their comfort zone and venture out to new and better territory, namely Hadoop, for their career advancement. Hadoop has taken precedence over other technologies owing to its success in its implementation.
·         Increased Demand for Hadoop Professionals after Hadoop 2.0:
The Apache Software Foundation recently released Hadoop 2.0 that incorporates several new features, including YARN. This release also shines light on a major problem that companies considering Hadoop initiatives are destined to face the overwhelming lack of Big Data expertise in today’s labour pool.
·         Increased opportunities for Home-grown Talent:
A lot of companies are looking to retrain their in-house talent pool in Hadoop. Professionals who take active interest in getting trained in Hadoop are given preference over others. Hadoop training gives you an edge over others in your professional growth.

Global Implementation of Hadoop

Online Training – A Practical way for Hadoop Training:
Owing to the busy schedules of IT professional and the impracticality of going for in-class training, the best way to add skill is through online Hadoop training. The flexibility and comfort that comes with the online training is best suited for people who are busy with their professions as well as looking to add more value to their proficiency.

Here is a look at one of the class recording on Hadoop. It is obvious that the online training does not compromise on the learning aspects. The sessions are interactive and give an in-class atmosphere even though not being physically there.

Six Sigma is the most demanding certification across the globe. It helps the individual to take their career at new height. Six Sigma was introduced by Motorola in 1980 for quality purpose. Then it was followed by many top MNC’s like American Express, GE, POSCO, Toshiba, Sony, DuPont, Kodak etc.
This certification is required to get the quality and to manage the project effectively. Six Sigma is based on DMAIC methodology. At the project level, there are black belts, master black belts, green belts, yellow belts and white belts. These people conduct projects and implement improvements.
·         Six Sigma Black Belt: Leads problem-solving projects. Trains and coaches project teams
·         Green Belt: Assists with data collection and analysis for Black Belt projects. Leads Green Belt projects or teams
·         Master Black Belt: Trains and coaches Black Belts and Green Belts. Functions more at the Six Sigma program level by developing key metrics and the strategic direction. Acts as an organization’s Six Sigma technologist and internal consultant
·         Yellow Belt: Participates as a project team member. Reviews process improvements that support the project
·         White Belt: Can work on local problem-solving teams that support overall projects, but may not be part of a Six Sigma project team. Understands basic Six Sigma concepts from an awareness perspective

This certification is so much in demand that each and every organization is looking for Six Sigma certified professionals. Once you get certified with this Six Sigma certification, you will get immediate hike on your current salary. In a 2010 survey by Quality Progress magazine, self-employed Six Sigma consultants reported average income of $114,654, with a median income of $86,000.
Respondents who maintain full-time employment earned an average of $47,748 from their Six Sigma consulting work, while those who worked part time reported consulting income of $60,571. Employees who specialize in Six Sigma but perform no consulting work reported an average income of $92,657, with a median of $86,102.

Six Sigma Can Help Project Managers Improve Results

If it was easy to improve business results, results would always improve. Obviously, this is not the case. Business leaders understand the power and usefulness of managing the improvement of key business results through projects and process improvement teams. That is why business leaders use project managers to address the toughest process improvement issues they face.
It only makes sense, then, for project managers to be trained in how to improve processes through improving key performance metrics. And there is no better approach to process improvement than the application of Six Sigma tools and methods. It is a discipline that focuses on these very issues—process improvement driven by key measure improvement. Moreover, the disciplines of project management (PM) and Six Sigma are not only similar, they are complementary.
The similarities between project management and Six Sigma include:
·         Use of projects as the avenue for improvement.
·         Utilization of established project management techniques to effectively manage a project and project teams.
·         Necessity of actively involved and proactive project sponsors or champions to help ensure project success.
·         Life cycle and phases.
·         Need for a well-trained project facilitator to lead the effort.

Six Sigma adds additional dimensions to project management:
·         Powerful set of process improvement steps and tools.
·         Statistical and process thinking, to understand and improve results.
·         Understanding of variation, to reduce knee-jerk reactions.
·         Quantitative analysis, to base decisions on facts and data.
Key metrics, if established correctly, reflect the capability of underlying processes. To improve any key metric, then, it only makes sense to improve the underlying process. As the quality guru Edwards Deming once said, “If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” A strategy that focuses on the key metrics that describe the process is an effective way to improve results. And a fact-based and logical approach addressing the root causes of problems must be applied by project teams.

DMAIC—Road Map to Improving Results

The Six Sigma road map to improving business results is DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, and control), a proven set of steps that can be applied to any process in any industry. The five DMAIC steps are easy to understand, make total sense, and match up well with the established project phases.

Step One—Define

As does any project, the Six Sigma define step requires extensive planning and scoping to ensure that the project is set up correctly. The project manager develops the project charter, ensures proper sponsorship for the project, and acquires appropriate cross-functional team members. Timelines are established, proper training on the DMAIC steps is given to all stakeholders, and ground rules are developed. Additionally, key measures are agreed upon that link the project to the business unit’s strategy. The key measures must show sustained improvement to ensure project success. High-level process maps are also developed by the team to help with scoping the project and consistent process understanding.

Step Two—Measure

·         Specific data that is needed but is not available
·         Available data that is not accurate or not believable
·         Current measurements that are not helpful
·         Available data that is too much or too little
Many teams skip this important step, a classic mistake with lasting consequences. In the measure step, the team develops a data-collection plan to ensure the accuracy of the measurement system. Process decisions must be based on sound and accurate data; not on guesses, estimates, or anecdotal comparisons. Data is stratified in various ways (by product, region, customer, shift, and so on) to help scope the project. An example of such data is shown in figure 3, a box plot stratifying data by region.

Step Three—Analyze

Once the team has gathered the data and made the charts, they begin to look for clues to the improvement path through the key metrics. Various statistical tools can be used to stratify the data to reveal the important information and logical next steps. Process analysis can uncover bottlenecks and constraints, while root-cause analysis can hone in on the key measure drivers. Figure 4 shows a scatter plot, a tool that can help the team visualise relationships between variables or measures.

Note that the team has not made any changes or recommendations to the process yet. Another common mistake teams often make is to jump right to the improve step, trying to solve the problem without truly understanding its underlying processes and root causes. Going through the DMAIC steps in order is vital to project success and to seeing quantitatively if the key measure under study is improving. Utilizing the DMAIC steps correctly actually speeds up a project because the team now has a path to follow.

Step Four—Improve

The improve step verifies and validates recommendations and demonstrates, with data and charts, sustained improvement before final process changes are implemented. A process can be extremely complicated. Without proper testing and validation, there is no way to ensure that the final recommendation actually does make a sustained difference. Figure 5 shows evidence of breakthrough and sustained improvement in a key metric, the goal of every Six Sigma project.

Step Five—Control

Once improvements have been verified, the new process must be implemented and then handed off to the ultimate process owners. As in the closure phase of project management, in the DMAIC control step, the team closes down the project and hands off the final recommendations to those closest to the process. This step requires training the recipient organization on the data collection plan and how to maintain and interpret the key metric charts. A reaction and audit plan must be put in place to ensure that the improvements are maintained over the long term and that the results do not drift back to previous levels.
The essence of control is to maintain long-term gains. Without proper and effective efforts made at this step, organisations can easily work on the same problem over and over again because of the tendency for things to go back to the way they were before project initiation.

Conclusion

Improving business results is important in every organization. Project managers are often the change agents charged with leading the improvement efforts. Understanding and incorporating the Six Sigma DMAIC steps into every project can help project managers not only be more effective but can lead to breakthrough results. Attaining a Six Sigma Green Belt certification is the best approach for project managers who want to demonstrate that they are ready to accept the challenge of improving their organization’s business results.

Cloud Efforts with ITIL
Most IT organizations use ITIL service management to improve their service delivery. Yet these organizations often face significant challenges with cloud computing. Cloud is a service consumption model. To succeed with cloud you need service management. This post shows how to make sure your ITIL processes are set up to aid your cloud efforts, and not hold them back.
Question your perceptions of ITIL, and be sure you use ITIL for its intended purpose. ITIL is a reference that describes generic service management best practices. Examine your existing ITIL implementation. With cloud, external providers do most of the work. Cloud ops teams must shift to managing services and service providers, but your teams may not be at the required level of ability.

Examples of new skills include:

Service Level and Supplier Management transform from “nice to have” to “absolutely must have.”
Capacity Management takes on an entirely new meaning too, shifting from component (long lead time) to service (near real-time.) In addition, removing excess capacity is a critical success factor. Traditional IT has little or no skill in making sure excess capacity goes away quickly.

Event Management and monitoring becomes critical since the cloud service masks the underlying IT infrastructure. User transactions (synthetic or live) become the basis of monitoring.
Incident and Problem Management shift from leading investigations and troubleshooting to gathering information and communicating status.

Strategy changes from “build or buy” to “rent”, and the service portfolio requires careful attention to maximize benefits.
Understand that in cloud, development (dev) teams may want to release software daily or hourly. The traditional weekly or monthly change planning meeting is too slow. Existing Change and Release Management (ITIL) processes must change. IT governance, compliance, and audit must adjust to the new change management processes – this includes IT Compliance, Security, and General Computing Controls as well. Access Management has to change to accommodate shifting roles and responsibilities.

Familiarize yourself with the other related framework types successful ITIL implementations require such as Capability Maturity Model Integrated (CMMI), Control Objectives for IT and Related Technologies (COBiT), SERVQUAL, Six Sigma, and project management methodologies like those from the Project Management Institute (PMI.) All require tuning to align with cloud.

Launch your cloud ITIL initiative now by forming a committee chartered with documenting services in business context and terms. Next, evaluate business needs or market initiatives with customers to understand how IT service improvement can augment desired business outcomes from cloud. Develop ITIL process improvement proposals justified on expected business value from cloud computing.

Why ITIL Training for Employees?

The proverb “work smart, do not work hard” is the motto of Many organizations who want their employees to focus on the core processes such as increase in productivity, and enlargement of their customer base rather than on the non-core ones such as solving incidents and errors.

Organizations want their key personnel to possess vital skills that can be used for positive outcome of a project or in the case of an untoward incident. This is the main reason why they are interested in making their personnel certified in ITIL or other certifications such as PRINCE2 Certification (Projects in Controlled Environment) and PMP Certification (Project Management Professional).

Organizations are increasingly dependant on IT services and it is mandatory that they have to garner profits for the investment incurred for delivering a service.

Technological developments in every industry are occurring at a fast pace and any IT professional or any organization that does not adopt or adapt themselves to the changing trend will lose ground.

In recent times, ITIL has grown in popularity because it is a framework and it can be used by both Multinational Organizations and Small corporations for various benefits such as provision of services according to the requirements of the customer efficiently and effectively and also to stay one step ahead of their competitors.

Advantages for Organizations investing in ITIL certification for their employees:

Implementation of the required ITIL processes to an organization provides staff the capability to rise to the   challenges of any demand.

In other words, ITIL can be best described as a set of policies, principles and procedures that show the way IT services should be managed for a project. An improved performance or minor success during the course of a project paves the way for boosting the attitude of personnel positively.

· For an existing service to be modified as per the needs of business or for a new service to be designed and   released into the live environment in an Organization, personnel should have:
O   The right skills with essential knowledge and capabilities,
O   Technological tools required for the positive outcome,
O   Proper distribution of roles and responsibilities

These three factors are an asset and vital for any organization and to be successful. Implementation of the required processes can help an organization, in the long run, attain these three factors slowly.

An ITIL certification assists personnel to establish better communication with not only their peers but also with customers. Investing in ITIL training can, in due course of time, make the organization ITIL certified and having ITIL certified personnel can convince potential stakeholders and customers that the best policies, procedures and guidelines are followed and this can lead to greater investment in the projects.

Professionals, who have become ITIL certified by means of the organization investing in ITIL training, feel more valued as they can diversify their job routine and better express themselves in their initiative towards improvement, if any.

 ITIL Certification: Salary and Promotion

ITIL® is the most important certificate for IT professionals and employees wishing to know more about IT Service Management. Organizations that work according to ITIL® use the complete ITIL® methodology for training personnel based on their roles. Their ITIL® skills enable them to perform and cooperate better
.
IT Infrastructure Library® (ITIL®) management practices address IT challenges head on.
Through combining the best practices of IT service management strategy with a deep understanding of business requirements, ITIL management allows data to be collected, analyzed, and distributed following reliable methodology.
As more companies realize the effectiveness of ITIL management, the need for ITIL professionals is growing in many industries including healthcare and higher education.

There are many within the field of IT who are not only looking to “climb the ladder” but also increase their earning potential; and rightly so, if you are skilled and worth it, you should be correctly compensated.
This is of course where technical certifications come into play.
While the average IT employee might earn around $70,000 to $90,000 per year and those with additional certifications, like ITIL, are able to routinely add around $20,000-$30,000 per year or more to their salaries.

The investment that you put toward ITIL certification will boost your salary and continue to do so, year after year. The initial costs associated with ITIL certification are paltry compared with the long-term financial benefits gained; however, one must be dedicated to their profession to truly reap the benefits.

Let’s examine why ITIL is such an IT salary booster.  If you’re not familiar with ITIL, it can be briefly described as a collection of the best methodologies for establishing, maintaining, modifying and managing IT infrastructure.
The ITIL itself is essentially a compilation of the research and findings from various IT experts down throughout the years and across the globe. ITIL certification can essentially be broken down into three principal areas:

Foundation - This is the first level of ITIL qualification which builds standard terminology and focuses methodology on the general knowledge required for ITIL Services Support and Service Delivery. Candidates should expect to gain a basic understanding of what ITIL is and how it is implemented in the workplace.

·        Intermediate - This is the next level of ITIL certification. This level contains a number of educational modules that candidates are able to choose from, depending on their individual requirements.

Expert - This provides candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the entire ITIL scheme in great detail. Also delivered in a modular format, candidates are allowed to choose from a variety of ITIL processes based on their individual requirements.

The ITIL certification shows prospective and current employers a strong level of commitment to personal success and demonstrates the drive to stay ahead of the competition in the IT field.

By completing certification in an ITIL discipline, professionals gain a systemic and professionally valued approach to best practice methodology.
The ITIL certified professional can speak the same language as other ITIL professionals worldwide and will be able to network with a more elite group of professionals across a variety of IT disciplines.
